Number sequences explained
A number sequence is a row of numbers in a set order, built from a rule. The rule might add a step, multiply, alternate, or combine the numbers you already have. Find the rule and you can continue the series as far as you like.
Number series and number sequence mean the same thing in everyday practice. If you can solve one, you can solve the other.
Pattern recognition strategies
A few habits make sequences much easier:
- Write the differences between neighbouring numbers and look for a pattern in them.
- If the values jump quickly, test multiplication before anything else.
- Split the sequence into odd and even positions to catch two interleaved rules.
- Compare each number with its position, like position squared.
- Sum or subtract earlier numbers to test build-up rules.
Pattern puzzle types you will meet
Sequence puzzles reuse a small set of shapes:
- Arithmetic, with a constant step up or down.
- Geometric, multiplying by a fixed factor.
- Fibonacci style, adding the previous two numbers.
- Alternating, switching between two steps.
- Interleaved chains, where two sequences take turns.
