What are number series?
A number series is a list of numbers that follows a hidden rule. Your job is to find the rule and work out the numbers that come next. Some series add or subtract a fixed step. Others multiply, alternate between two rules, or grow by a changing amount.
Once you see the rule, the next number is obvious. The skill is spotting the rule quickly, and that is something you get better at with practice.
How to solve number series questions
Start by looking at the gaps between the numbers, then test a few simple ideas in order.
- Check the difference between each pair of numbers. A constant difference means a simple add or subtract rule.
- If the numbers grow fast, test multiplication or doubling.
- If the gaps themselves grow, the rule may be based on squares or a changing step.
- Watch for two rules taking turns, where every other number follows its own pattern.
- Try adding the previous two numbers, since some series build the next value that way.
Common pattern types
Most number series fall into a handful of pattern families:
- Add or subtract a fixed value, like 4, 7, 10, 13.
- Multiply or divide by a fixed value, like 3, 9, 27, 81.
- Alternating rules, where the series switches between two steps.
- Growing steps, where the gap increases each time.
- Squares and cubes, like 1, 4, 9, 16.
- Sum of the previous two numbers, like 1, 1, 2, 3, 5.
